I know people dont jump on over to the UK for the weather or the food, but there comes a time when this city has it all, and if you don't believe me, let me tell you about the food tour I went on with Eating London Tours.
First it was in the East End, which I do hang out in, if only rarely, Spitalfields Market and the emerging art places there, make it very bohemian and welcoming.
This tour was all things food, and if you thought all it was famous for is it's Brick Lane curries and Bagels you'd be right, but this tour shows underneath all that there is sooo much more to eat and explore.
Nicole, our Aussie guide, was full of energy and clearly really taken with the area, so much so she even lives in it.
Full of fantastic facts and food she swooped us on a whistle-stop tour of some of the areas lesser known heros.
Although I say whistle-stop it runs seamlessly and your 3 and half hours slips by unnoticed and always entertained.
So here's a snippet of the tour and what to expect...
Take for example:
Famous because it's keeping the tradition of British cooking alive for example Bread and
butter pudding was a poor mans food- usually made from stale left over bread, throw in some meat, some veg, stew it, sweeten with some
milk and butter, and mix the concoction and throw it into the oven. The Bread and Butter pudding we had was devoured in seconds, delicious!

ST JOHNS BREAD
AND WINE
St Johns Bread and Wine is one of top 50 restaurants in the world. Opened 10 years ago by Fergus
Henderson, originally sold wine and freshly cooked bread, so tasty and popular, it turned into a restaurant.
Henderson indulges in nose to tail eating, which means the entire part of the pig,
offal, heart, you name it is used. But for us it was breakfast, so we got a quarter each of the Bacon sarnie. The bread lightly toasted to take away the sugar, it was light and sublime accompanied by a special tomato
sauce which had mystery ingredients.
Very messy but very delicious.
Then we were moved swiftly onto The English Restaurant.
Bread and Butter Pudding traditionally made with stale left over bread. But not stale here fear not. |
Bacon sarnies, and Bread and Butter Pudding is as English as it gets really... but in the next post it's all about Cheese... British Cheese, enough to match the French, seriously a treasure trove...
In all there are 10 whistle stop food places, in all including the famous Brick Lane curry, and Bagel Shop, but more unknown for the fantastic melt-in-your mouth fish and chips, a sample of the special Trumans beer, and of course a stop at a sweet deserts place. The tour comes complete with some walking around the surrounding area, and knowledgeable Nicole. book one here
